A Brief Introduction to Chinese Orthopaedic Association
Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA) is one of the specialty societies under Chinese Medical Association. Aiming at promoting scientific exchange, providing orthopaedic education, and improving the orthopaedic health service level, COA was founded in 1980 in Tianjin at its first national meeting. As the official journal of COA, the Chinese Journal of Orthopedics started its first issue in 1981. The second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh national meeting were held in 1985, 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 respectively. From 2006, COA began to hold the meeting annually and the First International Congress of COA was held concurrently. The past five years witnessed a significant increase in the numbers of meeting participants, which reached 12,000 in 2010. With a registered membership of more than 30,000 orthopaedic surgeons out of 130,000 in total, the COA is the largest and most influential orthopaedic society in China. It has ten sub-specialty societies: Joint Surgery, Orthopaedic Research, Spine Surgery, Bone Tumor, Arthroscopy, Foot and Ankle Surgery, Osteoporosis, Trauma, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Nursing. During the Chinese Orthopaedic Association(COA) 2011 Congress,COA2011 adopted a broad international vision and presented attendants with a world-class gathering and numerous highlights. For the first time, COA 2011 Congress gathered world-class experts, presidents of international orthopaedic societies, presidents of more than 60 national orthopaedic societies, industry opinion leaders, and CEOs of leading orthopaedic companies in the world, and effectively built a China-centered platform for international cooperation.
